Our Next Meeting
Our next meeting will be Monday, July 22th at 7:00 PM

This Month’s Program
Holly will continue teaching us some different ways to make blocks that will help encourage you to warm up your sewing machine and get you sewing in this heat.
This month’s Laundry Basket Quilter is Kathy McCarty.

Our “3 Month Challenge”:
To help continue us on the journey of trying new and different things, we have the opportunity to participate in our newest adventure called The 3 Month Challenge. You will need to bring $5 in cash (please just bring a $5 bill… not a $10 or a $20… just a $5) to participate.

You will receive a 10” x 10” square of the challenge fabric and you will have 3 months to complete the challenge. You need to make a small quilt that is no smaller than 10” x 10” and no bigger than 20” x 20” (any size in between works!)

You must use at least one additional piece of fabric, and you can add as many more as you want, but the challenge fabric must be a recognizable piece of fabric on the front. The Challenge will need to be completed (quilted and bound) and brought back to our October meeting in order for you to be eligible to win the GRAND PRIZE drawing.

It doesn’t have to be elaborate, and it doesn’t have to be hard. Everyone has an equal chance of winning, as long as you play along and complete the challenge! So grab your $5 and come and join us!

Last Month’s Events
Valerie Smith demonstrated her 3 Hour tote using 9 jelly roll strips from start to finish including handles and binding. This tote was featured on the cover of the Winter issue of Quilts and More.

In August we will be having our annual Salad and Potato potluck picnic. There will be a signup sheet at the July meeting. This meeting will start at 6:00 PM, so mark it on your calendars!

At our September meeting, we will have a presentation by author Suzi Parron.
As the author of the book, Barn Quilts and the American Quilt Trail Movement, (2012, Ohio University Press), Suzi has spent the past year traveling the country speaking to quilt guilds and other civic groups. Quilters, in particular, have enjoyed learning more about the barn quilt movement and the ways in which quilting heritage is honored and preserved along the quilt trails. Her program has been well received at dozens of guilds, and she has been invited for return engagements already.

As a resident of Ohio, you are probably familiar with barn quilts. You may not know that the movement that began in Adams County in 2001 has spread to forty-four states. Over four thousand barn quilts celebrate our rich quilting heritage and often pay tribute to family quilters or to other individuals. Suzi’s website, barnquiltinfo.com, contains a lot of information on barn quilts, including an interactive map.
After her slide show presentation, there will be an opportunity to purchase one of her books. Please mark it on your calendar and bring a friend to enjoy learning about barn quilts.

In October we will have stations set up with quick patterns to help you with those Christmas gifts. If you have any ideas of what you would like to see demonstrated, please let one of your officers know.
2 1/2” Strip Drawing We will continue doing a monthly strip drawing but we are asking for 2 ½” strips. Please try to be as accurate as possible when cutting the strips. Here are the colors for the next few months in case you want to get a head start on cutting.

July-Green
August-Yellow
September-Homespun

Comfort Quilts
The recommended sizes are 48” x 54” for Veteran’s and Beatitude House quilts and 36” (or up to WOF) x 48” for children quilts.

If you make a block (or two or three) in red, white and blue from the block Holly demonstrated the previous month, one of our lovely ladies will volunteer to make a comfort quilt from them. Holly has also been picking the name of one of the people who brought a block and they get a gift. Last month’s winner was Caroline Benson.
